Jeanne

Costume design for 'Jeanne d’Arc' by Bertold Brecht, Noord Nederlands Toneel, director Koos Terpstra, opening night May 21, 2005

The farmer’s daughter Jeanne d’Arc convinces the spineless French crownprince Charles VII to engage in a fierce battle with the English occupation. With her sword she clears the road for the liberation of Orléans and the monarchy of Charles. When Jeanne refuses to accommodate to the selfish demands of the court, she becomes isolated and alone. Thanks to the funny lashing out to backdoor politics and present day hoaxes, Jeanne is a rich metaphor for today’s society, where the values of a committed and inspired individual are easily discarded as troublesome and elitist. The costumes strengthen the dramatic line in the play and are used by the actors in their acting. The characteristics of the performers are amplified in the costumes, for example the high and white collars of the power-hungry people at the court.
