Scenery and costume design for 'Richard III' by William Shakespeare, Rogaland Theatre, Stavanger, Norway, Direction Victoria Meirik, opening night September 5, 2005
Richard III is a play about power and seduction. Richard wants to become king, but his brother is crowned. By seduction, manipulation and murder Richard seizes the crown. In his fear to loose power again, he seals off his castle hermetically. But this does not prevent that he looses the crown and is murdered. I have created Richard’s nightmare. The tall, black space shining like a black wing, shows the power and wealth of the families. The walls can move, in this way creating constantly ever new images of horror. After his coronation occupies the castle, that he seals up in his paranoia with white tape. If Richmond attacks the castle, the high walls split open and the backstage area becomes visible.
